Oude stijl en vroege swing uit de jaren 20, 30 en 40. Pianist Willie 'the Lion' Smith leefde van 1897 tot 1973. Hij komt voort uit de traditie van Fats Waller en James P.Johnson, en diende als voorbeeld voor collega's als Duke Ellington en Art Tatum. Zijn stijl is gebaseerd op die van de 'stride-piano', maar bevat ook modernere elementen uit de swing-periode. Eerst solo-opnamen uit 1939, daana duo-opnamen met collega-pianist Don Ewell uit 1967.
